AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES

Your body’s immune system protects you from illnesses. But when your own immune system begins to attack the healthy cells in your body, you develop an autoimmune disease. There are about 80 types of autoimmune diseases. These run in families. They may have flare-ups; they get worse and then come remission, when they disappear. Women are more prone than men to develop autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic pancreatitis, etc. most often during the child-bearing years.
