Husband feels that giving financial independence to a woman is tantamount to losing control over her. They fear that she will be free to make choices that may not find favor with the husband and cause a rift in the family. In the Indian context, a woman’s physical as well as thinking freedom is controlled by first her parental and later her matrimonial family. Even today, in well-to-do business families as well as in the families of corporate heads, women get their monthly allowance for housekeeping and money for their pastimes and then they are expected to sign cheques and property papers whenever asked to do so by the family. They do not have the right to question any of the transactions.
